Happy Bastille Day

...or le quatorze juillet as it is informally (& widely) known. It is also the natal day of one of GG's aunties & we have humorous memories of sparklers & French treats--so as to do justice to both hallowed occasions. We are not French but Giulia is half-French & responds to French much better than English or Italian (she is scolded in Italian & this no doubt explains her language preference). Her editor went to school in Strasbourg, France & a major GG Central feature is our friendship with a Franco-American famille.

Maison Française (part of the French Embassy) in Washington, DC probably has room for you if you'd like to attend the party tonight. They publish France Magazine (which we love); we remember the good old days when it was free. Oh well. It's still worth the money.

Please remember, you can always make a donation to UNICEF or to Darfur Peace & Development Organization instead of buying the most expensive champagne. There are several lovely French champagnes that do not cost a fortune. Yes, there are, so do not argue! Oops. Sorry, got carried away there.

We're off to plan all manner of delightful doings (well, for the weekend, truth to tell), so we'll be back on Saturday for week's end. Salut!

Poets & Their Places

Poets & Writers Magazine did a feature last year on writer's spaces. These are two of the photos featured. The first is Amy Groshek's space in Madison, Wisconsin; the second is Carmen Iriondo's in Buenos Aires. Maybe it's good that we don't have a working camera...we might be tempted. Hmmm. Nope.

The Paris Review, No. 186

A nod to Maitresse, in Paris. Yesterday's "Links on Wednesday" post is excellent. One important item is the Marilynne Robinson interview in the current Paris Review. The post mentions that the interview is making the rounds, true enough; but one more is just fine with GG's editor if more people read it.

GG Gourmet Central's Collector's Issues - Paris

GG's editor was so happy to see a new Gourmet Collector's Edition at the newsstand--it cheered her right up. (Of course, we always buy the Rome & Italian issues, if we're not subscribing that year.) The last Paris issue we can find in the apartment is the one pictured above, from 2001. Gorgeous recipes in there, as well. We'll print some of the ones we make regularly in the next few weeks.

Paris Breakfasts artist extraordinaire, macaron-obssessed Carol Gillott must be happy, about the new issue of Gourmet, as well. (We haven't seen the blog in a few days.) There are some good variations on a classic macaron recipe, if you're so inclined. GG is dreaming of slinking (she is a cat, after all) in to Ladurée (any of the shops), ah. GG is dreaming of being in Paris (or Strasbourg), Rome or Naples, period. Macaron or gelato, it doesn't really matter--how about both?!
