Holiday Pizza Party

Affordable & easy, we do this fairly often. (Yes, buy the pizza dough. Keep that to yourself unless forced to answer.) Here are six terrific ideas via Food52. And for those longing for an Alsatian tarte flambée (or flammekueche), this recipe is super easy & works well. You're welcome. xoxo

Handmade Holidays

Yes, yes, one more thing to worry about for the holidays. Make stuff. Oh please, nooooo,  you squeal as you plug your ears. Don't stress out; don't worry about making something complicated or a lot of something complicated. Find something simple that appeals to you & try it. It can be relaxing. On our menu are these heart-shaped felt ornaments. If you're the Valentines-type, they can do double-duty, too.

Here are 101 Handmade Christmas Ornaments - go to it.

Keep up with Lori's lovely Handmade Holidays label for inspiration.

Remember Laura's snowflake curtain? She is also a prolific ornament maker. Easy, cute, free tutorials.

Orchid

This holiday season, along with the forced bulbs, poinsettia, & roses & lilies (a favorite combination), finally buy the potted orchid that you've thought about every single time you walk past the display. At many markets, especially Whole Foods, there are lovely simple ones at excellent prices. And easy to care for, too (so it is rumored:).

Beautiful photograph by Jessie Roth via automatism. Visit Lori's flower label for inspiration & some relief from this crazy world.

Autumn Decorations

If you're not planning on decorating for Halloween or want something autumnal that can hang around through Christmas & Hanukkah, a hand-sewn velvet pumpkin from Terrain might just be the thing. There are three different sizes & a portion of the price is donated to The Learning Community, a non-profit dedicated to providing free parenting resources.

For more traditional ideas (& really last-minute ideas), see Martha Stewart's pumpkin pages.

A cute (& free) downloadable Halloween card (with envelope) to color.

If you're not into the whole earth tone thing, here's a white pumpkin with pink flowers.

GG Flower Bulb Reminder

Why didn't you remind us?! White Flower Farm is our favorite vendor for bulbs & there are still many in stock. Whether you have a garden or a deck (we don't) or not, remember to start forcing bulbs now. You will be so very happy if you do this now.

Clutter & Creativity

Clutter & creativity do not go together; at least not in this home. (Why mess causes stress.) The problem on the surface is not nearly as dire as anything on television or in magazines but it feels awful. Two weeks ago, a lot of paper & assorted effluvia left here. What a relief. But a lot has remained & must be kept (paperwork, mostly). And it isn't organizing itself, no. It's just laying there all over the floor! Shriek.

So, here are some links if you need help, too:

On the advice of a friend, we've signed up to follow FlyLady

Summer Cocktails

As you read this: it is cocktail hour. Somewhere!

This blackberry-sage cooler (non-alcoholic) looks great. Of course, you can add alcohol. Having recently acquired far too many (as if that's a thing:) black raspberries & blackberries, this is on tonight's to-do list. If you're serving more than a few people, our friend, Hermione's mama, swears by this raspberry-herb prosecco-based Martha recipe in the summer. Here are 25 summer cocktails if you'd like something else.

It's a real Monday here so that's it for today.

Cheers. xo/GGCM

Simple Summer Flowers

After work, tonight, tomorrow, this week: do it. Pick or buy some flowers. Just a few. If you do that, our work here is done. Such an ugly political season & it's only going to get worse (sorry but that's the truth). You don't have to know much about flower arranging for simple summer flowers but here's a foolproof, low-tech way to use just about any waterproof container (not just roses) as a vase.

Visit Amy Merrick's website & Apple a Day for inspiration. Beautiful flowers, photographs (& words).

Winter Decorating

Don't throw out the holly & other holiday greens. First, it's not Twelfth Night (Epiphany) yet. Second, we've held on to evergreens well into late January/early February in year's past with great results. Look at what you have on hand, cull out the very dry, pick off brown leaves, etc. Look for containers or vases or even jam jars for a fresh look. If you want "fluffy," fair-trade carnations look good tucked into holly & pines. Also, poinsettia, amaryllis, & paperwhites are on sale because they're leggy. Snap those up (offer a lower price if you think it's warranted, btw) & use them as cut flowers.

While you're at it: maybe keep out a string or two of fairy lights & put them around the largest window in the house or apartment or just around a large mirror or painting over a fireplace. The real cold weather has just arrived here; keeping some decorations up, even reworked, keeps the holiday spirit alive.

Primrose

Alert: GG's editor spotted a first crop of primroses today at the local market. A few dollars for a flowering plant that will keep giving for weeks (if cared for properly) is a must-do. During the day, make sure it gets some light; in early evening, put it where you'll see it regularly. Instant cheer.

If you've always walked past them, consider buying one (or 3). If you have a garden or balcony, plant them when they are spent. We ended up with a true primrose path many years ago at our former home.

PS: Primrose tip: pinch off spent blooms at the base. This will help new flowers bloom.

Sweet Paul Holiday 2011

GG Garden Reminder - Indoor Bulbs

It's time, people! (Oops, it's past time.) Check shops & online for bulbs to force inside. Catalogue copy will usually indicate if a bulb is suitable for indoors persuasion. If you've never done this before, see Concha's post--with lovely photographs--on paperwhites; here's a good post on the ease of forcing regular old crocus bulbs. Kevin Lee Jacobs has an excellent post on indoor bulbs on Garden Design.

Giulia's editor has a longing for hyacinth & muscari this year. Hyacinth bulbs aren't as inexpensive as some others, so we're mulling it over. Possibly, we have mulled until (perhaps) the only hyacinth available will be single bulbs in the market. In which case, sold.

ciao-bloom-meow/GGCM

PS: You have time to plant last-minute bulb purchases outside. It's true, believe us. We've planted clearance-priced bulbs in the stinging cold.

Pretty Deer

While chasing Giulia (into everything as usual), beginning (!) Halloween prep, & readying for what feels like a sudden cold snap, GG's editor slowed down enough to see deer outside the window early this a.m. The building borders a finger of Rock Creek Park so that makes sense. We know that deer have become a controversial subject in many parts of the country. We're not getting into that now. They are pretty to us.

We use Sharon Montrose's baby deer notepad for daily lists. It might be discontinued, hope not. Will check that out. These brass deer on Etsy would be pretty for autumn/holiday decor, no? Karen at the The Graphics Fairy has three versions of the vintage deer ready to print out today. All in all a satisfying bit of synchronicity.

Back tonight/tomorrow!

Pick Your Own Summer Flowers

We usually pick our flowers at the farmers market as we haven't a garden now. But there is a lovely alternative (when it isn't near 100 degrees) & that is a pick-your-own flower farm. It allows you the fantasy of frolicking in a field of flowers, choosing blooms.

There is a farm not (too terribly) far from
GG Central that is actually named Fields of Flowers. We're definitely going to invite some friends go there this summer. Giulia is a flower-loving little cat but she'll stay home for this outing. No worries, though. She'll have lots of fun picking the flowers out of the vases here at home. *Sigh*

A list of pick-your-own farms (including countries other than the States & Canada).

Have a Cozy Evening

If your evening plans don't include going out tonight (it's too cold here!), the first two episodes of Downton Abbey are online (for US households, not sure about Canada) until 22 February. (You can also buy the episodes through iTunes.)

To warm up, try a mustard bath & some ginger tea. (Giulia is resisting both, so we'll leave her alone. She's clearly very comfy.)

A fascinating & amusing New Yorker article Sweet Revolution, the power of the pastry chef by Adam Gopnik.

A delicious & colorful meditation on
Andy Warhol & French pastry.

For a smile, here's the almost criminally-cute baby Toby.

Fresh Flowers for Tough Times

For those of us residing in the State of Penury, here is an excellent idea by Sarah of Blossom and Branch, via Design*Sponge. It's a definite upgrade from our parsley-in-a-creamer. This is Sarah's second post in a twice-a-month series, Flowers A-Z. Take a look, you might be surprised by the ingredients.

GG Garden Reminder - Flower Bulbs

Though the illustrations & exhortation below are from the archives, we're running it a month early. There are sales everywhere online & in stores on bulbs. GG is sorry that her editor did not buy more bulbs last year (before they ran out...see? Happened to us, too). Giulia likes to lounge in front of floral displays, so as to set off her expensive highlighted fur to best advantage. Oh, & on another note, The Harmless, Necessary Cat is starring on her editor's blog, bricolage, right now. ciao-meow

***************
This is a reminder to lay in some bulbs--soon. We don't have a garden either (anymore) but are fairly adept at 'persuading the paperwhite.' Actually paperwhites are easy & in stores now. However, if you buy some bulbs on the weekend, you can force those as well. (We prefer the word persuade.) Follow-up links & reminders to articles forthcoming but you have to buy the bulbs really, really soon. Or you'll be green with envy over all those displays of tulips & other bulbs from the holidays into next spring. We really don't want to hear complaining! (And while you're at it, what do you mean you don't have a pumpkin yet? OK. Well, neither do we...)

GG's Editor Hits Roof, Needs Peeling from Ceiling

GG has turned into a feline Pippi Longstocking. She has been so very devilish that her editor has to rest, perhaps for the rest of the month. Maybe until after the Fourth of July; we'll see. (Saving the world is all well & good, Giulia, but get your own computer!)

Flowers in a Wine Bottle - DIY Project

GG & her editor are back home after a week in exile from a freezing apartment. We're looking to spiff things up around here, mainly through sewing curtains & such. However, this project from design*sponge caught our eye. The idea is made all the more attractive by the impossibility of GG Vandalism. (OK, it was a mistake, those purple tulips all over the floor last night...fume). Go here for all the details. By Lindsay & Tayor of purr design, can you stand it? Wait until you see their logo. It was meant to be, GG. [photographs via design*sponge, by purr design]

GG Garden Reminder - Indoor Bulb Time

It's time (almost past time) to persuade the paperwhite (& others). Please see here for last year's New York Times article by Anne Raver on forcing bulbs. Also, here on GG's editor's blog. Yes, she does more than cater to GG & (try to) persuade people on other, weightier matters. For instant gratification, amaryllis & paperwhite kits are hard to beat...but branch out. If you don't have a cold mudroom, garage, balcony, don't worry, a fridge will do just fine. You'll be so happy if you do this, trust us.

Happy Wednesday!
