Heifer USA recently kicked off Seeds of Change, a five-year project to support and cultivate sustainable community food systems and create jobs in Arkansas and Appalachia. In collaboration with the U.S. Department of Agriculture and other partners, Heifer USA will build a food system value chain that connects farmers with businesses, markets and their communities. - Heifer Blog
Are you looking for a winter project? What about teaming up with family, friends, a school or community group to raise some funds for a Heifer International gift? A flock of chicks, ducklings, or goslings are $20.00 each. A Flock of Hope is only $60.00. You could probably raise money quickly for those. Then think about continuing on through 2012, working up to a spectacular holiday gift at year's end. It's exciting to think about it.
Start with some peeps & see how it goes. To get started, visit Heifer International & take a look at their work, the gift catalogue, & their blog. (By the way, Heifer also has projects in the U.S.)
A gift from the online art gallery Collect.give includes more than just a pretty picture—sales of each of the affordable limited edition prints benefit a charity of the artist’s choice. Contemporary photographers from across the country sell 10 to 40 prints of one of their images and 100 percent of the profit goes to a charitable organization—including Doctors Without Borders, the UN World Food Programme, and World Hunger Relief. Since its inception in December 2009, the site has raised over $19,000. Talk about a gift that keeps on giving! (by Elizabeth Stamp, Elle Decor)
This beauty is for sale at Made4Aid's Etsy shop. We're thinking it could accommodate a laptop, too. While this bag does require extra money for shipping (only 5.00USD within the EU), there are two pretty bags available, free shipping anywhere in the world. Made4Aid accepts payment via PayPal & 3 major credit cards. If you're not buying anything this year (or yet), understood. But visiting the site's shop & adding it to your favorites would be helpful. Thanks so much.(image property of Made4Aid/used with permission) ciao-meow/The Mgmt.
Hoorah. Many of GG Central's favorite gifts given last year for the holidays & birthdays were from the good folks at Made4Aid in Britain. Instead of auctions (which we enjoyed), you can just go directly to Made4Aid's Etsy shop & have a look. There will be more additions in the next few weeks. Also, if you would like to donate anything, please get in touch with Made4Aid at made4aid [!at] yahoo.co.uk. They are super-friendly & talented people.
GG's editor uses her French market bag (made in England) every single week. Our friend Maria Caterina wears her Neapolitan skinny scarf proudly (& will again if it ever cools off, oh please). Our friends in Darfur use this lovely hand-embroidered tablecloth for their tea table in the Women's Cooperative. Etc. More to come, we just wanted you to know. There's more but Giulia has begun howl-meowling for her supper. Good grief, what a racket!
GG just hopped up to look at the television. She heard a song advertising a film. We don't know about the film, but it was great to hear the song. Since we really can't say much about other matters at the moment, you might as well have a little fun. Here's a link to get you started on the archaeology & history of Little Solsbury Hill & the Cotswolds. Giulia wants to ride a bovine, but you can watch Peter Gabriel riding a bicycle while singing a song. In a circle. With a big audience. What would we do without English eccentrics? (And Scottish, Welsh, & Irish eccentrics, too.) Also, in case you didn't know: Peter is a humanitarian of the first order. (image, here)
Our friend Susan of Darfur Peace & Development Organization (DPDO) visited some of DPDO's schools on her trip to Darfur this past May (2008). It never ceases to amaze how resilient these kids are, going to school under such appalling circumstances. These little folks are students at DPDO's Mastaria School of Peace in North Darfur.
DPDO is partnering with Tents of Hope for a three-day event for Darfur on the National Mall (& a few other venues), November 7-9 in Washington, DC. This is another reminder that if you are in town, we'd love to meet you. Go here for an updated list of activities. The painted tents, by groups all over the United States, will be shipped to Darfur to serve as schoolrooms until permanent buildings can be constructed (or in some cases, reconstructed). If you can't come, you can still visit the links & participate in some ways. Updates through next weekend.
There will be a vigil outside the Sudanese Embassy on Friday, 7 November 2008. Details soon.
Oh we are sad about the loss of lovely Paul Newman. We'll put in the link to his foundation soon. At the moment, there's so much traffic that the site is unavailable in its entirety. Above is a photo of Newman at the UN in 1979 as a representative. An unabashed liberal humanitarian, he always said that his single highest honor was inclusion on Nixon's enemies list. Here is the BBC's obituary.
We love, love, love him & our condolences to Joanne Woodward & their children, the rest of the family, & their friends. xoxo, GG Central
