Metamorphosis

If you happen upon some larvae (or by this late in the spring, tadpoles) don't interrupt the process. (Check your local & state laws.) But if you see some danger to them, you could try to raise them. Giulia's editor raised three tadpoles to froghood some years back. They looked much like the teeny frog in the photo. They also had cute stripey legs that were très chic, honestly. (But that's not why they were adopted...catching all those insects was a total pain: you've been warned.) When they grew up, they were returned to their native area.

Here's a list of frogs & How to Raise Tadpoles. If you have a cat, make sure to fit a lid over the new frog home or tragedy will no doubt ensue.

Sunday Squirrel

Don't talk to GG's editor about hating squirrels because we love them. They wouldn't have to hog the bird food if you fed them, too. Right? If they seem low on food right about now, you might look around your home. If you have some fruit, gourds, pumpkins, things you've decorated with (but not sprayed with paint, for heaven's sake), make a present of those. They love them. Also, of course, nuts. So make a squirrel some supper. Naturally, don't allow a squirrel to chomp on your finger, etc.

Hope your weekend is cozy & warm.

PS: We didn't even know until now but yesterday was Squirrel Appreciation Day!

Kids' Farm at the National Zoo is Saved

Thank goodness: A generous $1.4 million gift from State Farm Insurance to the National Zoo guarantees that the Kids’ Farm exhibit will remain open through 2016.

If you live in the Washington area, we urge you to visit the Farm (as soon as the temperature goes down a bit, oof). If you can't be here now but would like to look around, you can pay a virtual visit to the Farm. There's a slideshow, a Barn, a Pizza Garden (yum), & more.

Have a great Monday!

The Bronx Zoo's Cobra

Have you followed the adventures-by-tweet of the now-recaptured Bronx Zoo's Snake? She's a witty Egyptian gal. The zoo's naming contest Who's that Sssssnake is open through Thursday (EDT). We hope she continues to tweet as it has provided many laugh out loud moments since March 28th.

Update - The cobra has been named "Mia" & will make her debut-at-the-zoo on Sunday, 9 April.

12 Days of Panda Claws in Washington, DC

Panda Claws (the official ZooLights ambassador) will be visiting hot spots in the D.C. metro area over 12 days, between November 29 and December 3 and December 6 and 12. He is very excited to let everyone know that ZooLights is free this year.

GG is excited. She thinks that, finally, this year she will be going to ZooLights. (Doubtful. But you never know.) If you are in the Washington, DC Metro area, visit the link for complete rules & prizes. Personally, we'd choose any prize called The Guppy Gala.

If you're not here but will be visiting, be aware that this is a popular event & though it's free this year, parking is not. Therefore, if it's a mere brisk night, park at an outer Metro station car park & hop on the Metro Red Line to the Woodley Park-Zoo or Cleveland Park stops & follow the hordes. Riding Up Solsbury Hill - Week's End

GG
just hopped up to look at the television. She heard a song advertising a film. We don't know about the film, but it was great to hear the song. Since we really can't say much about other matters at the moment, you might as well have a little fun. Here's a link to get you started on the archaeology & history of Little Solsbury Hill & the Cotswolds.
Giulia wants to ride a bovine, but you can watch Peter Gabriel riding a bicycle while singing a song. In a circle. With a big audience. What would we do without English eccentrics? (And Scottish, Welsh, & Irish eccentrics, too.) Also, in case you didn't know: Peter is a humanitarian of the first order. (image, here)

The Wild Ponies of Chincoteague - 85th Annual Swim

Giulia has greeted with unusual hard feelings the news that she will not be attending the 85th Annual Firemen's Carnival, Pony Swim & Penning & auction in Chincoteague, Virginia this Wednesday (28 July 2010). This news was not unexpected but one cannot always reason with a feline.

That her editor was in Chincoteague (briefly) last month, only adds to Giulia's distress. It was decided that GG would not accompany us to the elegant Channel Bass Inn. The wonderful innkeepers offered a room suitable for the redheaded feline but the stress of worrying about her mischievous nature was too much for her editor's delicate nervous system. Channel Bass innkeepers, Barbara & David had eleven cats on the premises, so GG feels that she's been held back socially.

In plain American English: GG is stinkin' mad. For she also wants a Chincoteague pony (who doesn't?) to ride, especially at sunset on the Assateague* shoreline. She wants to visit Mueller's Ice Cream Parlour (again, who doesn't?), & she just wants to parade up & down Main Street as if she lives there. (On cue: who doesn't?)

GG must be content--this summer--with listening to Marguerite Henry's 1947 award-winning Misty of Chincoteague & looking at 2-1/2 decades worth of photographs. We avoid the pony swim (it's very crowded but it's fun to do once or twice), but the week before the big splash, the fireman have a carnival. You eat big pieces of pie, hop onto a ride, become ill, & shriek for it to stop. It's a tradition, you see. The operators think they're giving you extra time/fun, & all you can think is, "Oh dear, that last slice of blueberry is about to become public knowledge." It's more entertaining than it sounds; especially for masochists, one's friends & family.

Other big attractions are the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge, especially just before sunset. We hear sunrise is lovely, too, but um.... Also, ta da, our favorite, Assateague Island National Seashore. (Take a loop around the Refuge to & from the beach, daily. Terns, egrets, Great Blue Heron--if you are very fortunate indeed.)

The Feather Fund helps at least one child sucessfully bid on a pony at the auction. The late, lovely Carollynn Supplee & her spontaneous generosity inspired the Feather Fund. Grab a hankie & read Carollynn's story. We are pleased to see that there are two winners this year.

If you're going this year, have a super time. If you have never thought of going (not only at pony penning time), do. We've met many French Canadians over the years in Chincoteague. We're not sure if it's still a popular spot for them, but we hope so.

(*Assateague barrier island is divided between Maryland & Virginia. The Maryland herd is managed by the State & does not auction ponies.)

Bye, Bye, Baby (Baby Goodbye)

So Long, Farewell, auf Wiedersehen, Tai Shan (from DCist).GG & her editor tried to avoid posting about this but we can't help it. We're big panda fans (forever!)...check out the link to see lots of terrific shots from the National Zoo farewell party for Tai Shan. He leaves for China Thursday morning on a special FedEx "Panda Express." Farewell, Butterstick.

Lila the Burro

It's been donkey's years (sorry) since we came across Marianne Perdomo's lovely portrait of Lila. Since it's the Christmas season, & donkeys play quite a role in the story, we'll share it. Burros are so helpful--to our friends in Darfur, to Santorini & other Greek islands...all over the world. They are very smart & sweet, too. Since they work so hard, you'd think they'd be well-treated. Oops. Not always.

Here are
two links for wild burro rescue in the States. Here's another link to Bedlam Farm's Journal. They have cute donkeys there, too. Of course, now GG wants a burro of her very own. Um. No. But she can ride one if we go to Greece or Italy next summer. (And if she asks-meows nicely!)

ZooLights 2009 - Bid Adieu to Tai Shan

The annual ZooLights Festival is ongoing at the National Zoo. It's lots of fun & this year if you're in the DC-area, you have a special reason to go. This is adorable panda Tai Shan's last Christmas in America. He will travel to China & take up residence quite soon. Throughout ZooLights, the Giant Panda Habitat will be open for extended hours for those who wish to bid farewell to Tai Shan before he departs for China in early 2010. The Chinese have extended Tai's stay twice due to pleas from the public. This time the departure is for real, so go as soon as you can. [photographs by ]

Underwater-colors

GG has lobbied for fish pictures. So here are three pretty underwater scenes by Gertrud K. in Berlin (see here for her links).

As I was saying: ¡Hola!

Time constraints, so the chatty Blanquita will do the talking this morning. (Eli in the background is thinking, "Do we have a choice? Sigh.") Here's their humorous human mom's flickrstream [Marianne Perdomo, animal whisperer & rescuer extraordinaire].

NB: This is a feline-approved photo, bien sûr (GG likes dogs).

Reindeer love

Another kindly-faced reindeer from animalphoto. Wonder what he's thinking? (Get that camera outta my face, buster.) Here's the sweet-faced reindeer photo from last week. We miss him so a reindeer will be on the site through Christmas.

ZooLights in Washington, DC

The annual ZooLights display opens to the general public on Thursday, 18 December 2008. (Here for all details.) It's so much fun. Fairy lights in the shapes of selected animals. It's very easy to go to the Zoo -- right on the Metro. If you live in, near, or will be visiting, do go. This year the entire display, sponsored by PEPCO again, is constructed of LED bulbs. So no guilt either! (We wish we could take GG, she'd love it. Alas, it cannot be, so here's a tiger photo in her honor. )Photos © Rachel Cooper

Squirrel Love

Yes, they are cute. We don't like squirrel haters here. (And yes, they are a pain in the neck sometimes...but so is an adorable redheaded cat roaming these parts. A pair of squirrels would be nothing compared to the GG Show.) Don't know where these guys are from but we hope they're surviving this year's acorn shortage in much of the Eastern U.S. We just handed off a small butternut squash, an (oldish) clementine, & a few peanuts to a little squirrel family outside the door. We've not seen a single acorn this year & we're surrounded by oaks. The oaks flowered, so where are the acorns?

Sweet-faced reindeer

There were snowflakes in the air yesterday! Who could resist this sweet-faced reindeer [the photographer's title is Reindeer With Ear Tag Looks Right At Photographer]? We hope the ear tag is for a benevolent reason.

Make Way for Ducklings

Or at least one make room for one. First seen on A Cup of Jo, this Etsy find from Modish Vintage would make Robert McCloskey & Nancy Schön happy. Who knew there were so many ducklings in need of a home? It's a baby animal appreciation day on GG's blog.

St. Francis of Assisi & Blessing the Animals at the National Cathedral

Hey cats & dogs...wake up! You're going to miss the Blessing of the Animals at the Cathedral today. Ah well, GG's editor didn't get GG to the church on time either & she's disappointed. Next year. Meanwhile, there's some sort of do-it-yourself ceremony that can be done at home.

Don't forget the Walk for Animals tomorrow on the Mall.
