Autumn Flowers

...are still here; don't despair. Dahlias, asters, & chrysanthemums to name three are at many farmers markets in our area & most likely yours, as well. Or maybe you know someone who has some in their garden & would like to share.

A few links:

Halloween. It's the same day every year but it does creep up. Start now (if you've not already).

An easy-ish fig tart.

Thank you for the many kind messages of late. Have a lovely weekend. xoxo

Drunk on Apples

The title is from a poem; don't worry, Giulia isn't lurching around from the effects of Calvados. A busy day but here are some helpful apple links.

Apple basics from Martha.

Caramel apple handpies, whoa. A really great full-sized pie via Joanna.

Poems for Autumn

Here are some fall poems selected by the editors at the Poetry Foundation's terrific website. You can also do a search for more - the search function is excellent; save them in the feature 'my favorite poetry. And finally, if you are supposed to be writing but are stuck, some ways to unblock.

A busy day here; back tomorrow.

Summer into Fall

The first few yellow leaves have begun to fall when the wind picks up. It's also been cool enough in the mornings & evenings to remind us that autumn really is on the way. But it's still late summer & it will be while until summer clothes are put away. Tights, scarves, blazers, & sweaters keep favorite skirts & dresses out of storage. For Antipodeans, it's probably much the same in reverse, no?

For some general guidelines, this is a good slideshow (though some fashionistas will disagree). If you went neon this summer, here are some excellent ideas.

Saturday update: Back on Monday. Meanwhile, flowers inspire (get some). Halloween prep (yes!). Also a very happy Rosh Hashanah to our Jewish friends. If you're scrambling for a terrific honey cake recipe, here's the best. xo

Meatless Monday - September Tomatoes

Monday here is slipping away with little to show for it. But you could make this French tomato tart & feel quite accomplished. It is very easy (don't tell anyone). Another good & easy tomato tart; more Meatless Monday ideas. And a poem about tomato pies (yes) for good measure. xo

Metamorphosis

If you happen upon some larvae (or by this late in the spring, tadpoles) don't interrupt the process. (Check your local & state laws.) But if you see some danger to them, you could try to raise them. Giulia's editor raised three tadpoles to froghood some years back. They looked much like the teeny frog in the photo. They also had cute stripey legs that were très chic, honestly. (But that's not why they were adopted...catching all those insects was a total pain: you've been warned.) When they grew up, they were returned to their native area.

Here's a list of frogs & How to Raise Tadpoles. If you have a cat, make sure to fit a lid over the new frog home or tragedy will no doubt ensue.

Everyday Luxury - Honey

Of course you can buy honey year-round; but at farmers markets & coops, right now, beautiful jars & bottles of new golden honey are available. Saveur & Martha Stewart have good articles (& recipes) about honey. You can check with the National Honey Board for information about honey in your area.

If you're thinking "but I don't use honey enough & it just sits in a cupboard..." Leave the honey out on a counter or the table with a dripper. Look up a few recipes to use it with right away; it's not just for tea. Here's a favorite easy recipe & a favorite cake. You'll begin to use it more often. GG Guarantee.

And of course there are few things as satisfying on a chilly autumn day than bread & honey. Unless it's a spoon & honey. But we're trying to be less piggy these days;)

Every Leaf a Flower

Autumn is a second spring when every leaf is a flower. - Albert Camus

The trees outside our windows are still green but today there's a noticeable increase in yellow; in the near distance a red tinge is wider, longer every morning.
Thanks to Olga for this beautiful photograph. She used the Orton imagery method & you can use it, as well. Here's a step-by-step article from Creative Nature Photography.

Cheers!

Everyday Luxury - Chestnuts

Yes, we're pushing it, the season. It's close but not quite here. We know, we've searched. Dashing off to the farmers market near the White House & to check in on marchers downtown & see what's up. Reports back on Twitter.

Here is a favorite recipe, a how-to peel chestnuts, & a peek into castagne season in Italy. The best chestnuts we ever had were in Strasbourg & in Rome.

Hello October!

Giulia sends her regards. She's asleep in a pile of blankets retrieved from the linen closet in the middle of the night. Yes, it has turned brisk. We're off to the farmers market & hope to have rosy cheeks half-way there. It will be a super-successful day if we can find some beautiful tights & also smell woodsmoke on the way home.

If you're in the DC-area, the
Takoma Park Street festival is tomorrow. Stop by the Amnesty International table to say hello & GG's editor will give you a button in the color of your choice if you say you read this post.
Have a great weekend!

Anne Frank's Tree - An Interactive Monument

“Our chestnut tree is in full blossom. It is covered with leaves and is even more beautiful than last year...” - Anne Frank, 13 May 1944

Anne Frank often looked from the attic window at the chestnut tree behind the
secret annex. She wrote about it in her diary. Now, the more than 150 year old tree is diseased, but online it will live on. Leave your leaf in the virtual chestnut tree, forward it and keep Anne Frank’s ideals alive. (via Anne Frank House)

As autumn returns to the northern hemisphere, the leaves will color & fall. Sadly, Anne's chestnut tree has not begun its annual cycle as it completely fell last August (2010). It's more important than ever, then, to keep the idea of the tree alive.

The Anne Frank website is wonderful for adults & children. There are several extraordinary sub-sites; you can take a virtual tour of the award-winning secret annex site & go back in time to where Anne wrote her famous diary.
For students, a link for inspiration & information for school projects; for teachers, a link for you. The site (& subsites) is available in six languages.

Annabelle in Autumn

Autumn officially arrives tonight (at GG Central) at 11:09 Eastern Daylight Time. Herewith, a fun autumnal equinox article (with a pop quiz) from the CS Monitor. GG & her editor would feel much better if the weather would cooperate & knock it off. 90 degrees is not autumnal. Still, we know many people have entered the zone of cooler weather & might be looking for a good recipe. Try Nigella's Supper Onion Pie (for Tough Times)...we posted about it in 2008 before we understood how to regulate font sizes, etc. But follow the links to Nami-Nami food blog & Pille will guide you to a successful outcome (& some variations).

La Vendange at French-Word-A-Day

Wanna go to "grape camp"? No? Yes, you do. Because we said so, that's why.

Harvesting grapes is really, really hard, let
GG's editor tell you. But it can be fun, too. Kristin Espinasse's post about la vendange at her family's vineyard is most amusing & has lots of vocabulary. (ah ouais, a big red wine vineyard--the harvest began today. Their fourth. Congratulations!)

Our piddly posting continues as we remain under-the-weather. Now, go go go to France, if you please, & learn all about grenache grapes & so much more. (There are some cute beer-drinking guys in the fields.) Kristin has taken beautiful photographs that you can ogle over there. (Lovely red maple photograph by Jen Gotch)

GG Nests - Week's End

The present was an egg laid by the past that had the future inside its shell.-Zora Neale Hurston

As GG's editor tries to catch up, clean up, read, write, & rest, here are some pretty pictures of the future. It seems far away today. (Giulia, being a cat, remains unconcerned & asleep.)

ciao-meow/the Mgmt.

Update: Posting will resume by March 1st. St. David's Day!

On Autumn - Week's End

Where are the songs of Spring? Ay, where are they?/ Think not of them, thou hast thy music too,
--John Keats, complete poem...

Keats arrived in Rome (via Naples) 21 October 1820; the ship was quarantined & he did not arrive in Rome until 15 November. Though he did not write poetry in what were to be his last months, he wrote one letter, to his friend Charles Brown. It's heartbreaking, especially the last two lines. "...I can scarcely bid you good bye even in a letter. I always made an awkward bow."

The photographs are from the Keats-Shelley House near the Spanish Steps; the salon & Keats' bedroom. In these very rooms & at the Protestant Cemetery, GG's editor has disgraced herself several times with squeaky sniffs. Once, she embarrassed a younger sister & has not yet been forgiven. Ever after, she has visited alone. (Though GG is keen to visit & lounge on Keats' grave...as a few Italian gatti do. We doubt he'd mind--they must be discussing poetry, no?)

A lovely weekend to all. (Sniff.)

Autumn Orange

We could not resist these pretty photographs from Paul Moody of Vermont. It's still very green here but the yellowing of the leaves has begun. Orange & red are sure to follow. GG would love to ride a horse or a young cow--bareback (for which, she needs a pedicure!). Visit Paul's flickr stream, here.

Purple Crocus

Forgive our haste...a busy day but we will return. Meanwhile, this purplish-blue flower-jewel (by Gertrud K.) inspires thoughts of spring renewal, even on a morning when it seems winter is trying to make a return. Begone winter!

The following is by Linda Pastan (originally in Atlantic Monthly). More about Linda soon, but we don't think she'd mind if we reprinted it here.

Crocuses
They come
by stealth, spreading
the rumour of spring --
near the hedge . . .
by the gate . . .
at our chilly feet . . .
mothers of saffron, fathers
of insurrection, purple
and yellow scouts
of an army still massing
just to the south.

A tiny tough bird...

How do these seemingly fragile, teensy beings live in this weather? Lovely photograph by Tom Grim, Gray Bird in Cold Wind. Snow is coming (might arrive while we sleep). We hear tales of lots o' snow in the UK & Paris. Too late to check it out at this writing. Stay cozy.

Purple Finch

Another beautiful bird photograph by Tom Grim, Whitehall, Pennsylvania. (Here's his gorgeous flickrstream.) Even GG would leave this little guy alone (we hope). Just to be sure, her bird watching is restricted to one side of a double-paned window.

ciao-meow & good evening to all!
