Splitscreen: A Love Story

Splitscreen: A Love Story from JW Griffiths on Vimeo.

Currently flying around the web is this creative video by James Griffiths, winner of the Nokia Shorts Competition 2011. Griffiths won the $10,000 grand prize and his movie will be showcased at the 2011 Edinburgh Film Festival. Incredibly, this cute movie was all shot on the Nokia N8 mobile phone. -- via My Modern Metropolis

Shrimp Shots

We remain under the weather but are enjoying these links to Jean Shrimpton. People (us!) always think of David Bailey first when looking at Shrimp shots, but there were others, including Terence Donovan, John French, & Brian Duffy. Visit Brian Duffy's beautiful website - you can watch a documentary The Man Who Shot the Sixties.

Blueberry Blues

Achoo! Aches & pains. Wah!

Well that's out of our system; if only this sudden onset of a terrible summer cold were gone. We just had a market delivery & Giulia does not eat blueberries in great quantities. So we're researching blueberry smoothies. (Did you know that July is blueberry month? Neither did we.) Here are five things to do with one pint of berries.

If you have more recommendations, do send us a tweet @juliethecat.

Summer Evenings - Santorini

It's sad to see many people on Pinterest sighing over their "bucket lists" with what seems to be little to no interest in getting beyond the "some day-ness" of it. The only way we got to travel so much is that we planned long before there was money or the time to go anywhere. Buy a guide book--even used--about a place you want to visit. Use a little notebook--it doesn't have to be a Moleskine!--& begin planning. Keep these on your nightstand & before you go to sleep, work on your itinerary, read the book(s).

Meanwhile, make a watermelon & feta salad which is very Greek & healthy, too. And check out this hotel where we stayed many years ago...it is affordable. Don't put off planning! *finger wags* We only say it because we adore you.

Just One More Thing...

Have a great weekend...

But wait...thirty-two episodes of Columbo are available on Netflix Instant.
A Woman Under the Influence & Murder, Inc. (for which Peter Falk received his first Academy Award nomination) are both available, as well. For The In-Laws, Wings of Desire, The Sunshine Boys, & so many others, hie thee to a video store if you still have a membership or order it on Netflix DVD. Expect a delay.

Rest in peace, Peter Falk.

Lemonade

Sometimes you just have to stop panicking, make some lemonade, & sit a bit. And pet the cat. We'll be back...soon. Meanwhile, here are some classic lemonade recipes.

Shabby Apple's Dare to Design 2011

So you flip through magazines & scroll through fashion & style blogs. You look at pins on Pinterest. And you think "Bah. I could do better..." OK. Here's your chance, big shot. Whip up a design of a skirt, dress, or blouse & submit it to Shabby Apple's Dare to Design contest. Yep, you should. You know why? You don't have to sew it, that's why. (Though if you want to, that's great.)

There aren't many rules, but here are the few. You have until August 10. Will we enter finally? Not sure. If we do, we'll make sure you know.

Midsummer

Lord, what fools these mortals be!...Midsummer Night's Dream

Happy summer solstice to fellow fools in the northern hemisphere!

Giulia is allowed to have a teensy bit of a sweet on the summer solstice...this year it will be a crumb of this Tosca cake. See NPR's site for a midsommar Swedish menu.

Remember to visit Earthsky for all your solstice needs. They have gorgeous photographs there today.

Tonight

We're officially obsessed with the night sky this summer.
Earthsky has a wonderful feature on their excellent website called "Tonight." We're inching our way to the summer solstice (tomorrow), so now is a good time to check-in with Earthsky. Follow them on Twitter, Facebook, or through their RSS feed.

Click on the beautiful video,
The Mountain to see more night sky. More on this project soon but thank you to Marvelous Kiddo for bringing it to our attention. It is stunning.

Dream Ballet

17 year old Bianca Passarge of Hamburg dresses up as a cat, complete with furry tail and dances on wine bottles, June 1958. Her performance was based on a dream and she practiced for eight hours every day in order to perfect her dance.

That was some dream. Giulia approves, of course; doesn't everyone want to be a cat?

If you'd like to interpret yours, visit Dream Moods. Or you could go straight to the Carl Jung Wikipedia page (& choose one of the myriad links on that site).

Have a Classic Saturday

Several Jeanne Moreau films are available on Netflix Instant right now. If you can't get out to the movies tonight, that would be a great bet. You can sign up & watch right away (no, we do not work for Netflix!) Jules et Jim is available until Tuesday, the 21st. After that it will be DVD only for awhile. Have a great Saturday!

Comically Vintage

And now for something (sorta) different from James Joyce...

Three self-described paleocomicologists take vintage comics and "place them out of context.
Hilarity ensues..." Enough to make a cat laugh? Oh yeah. Also, the urge to shout, "I can make it funnier!" So, um, give it a whirl.

Back tonight or tomorrow for weekend round-up.

There is an ongoing personal maintenance crisis here at GG Central. A reminder of this today is an illustration by Gerald Zephyr on deviantArt. Off to figure out how to wrestle brows into Sophia-shape. (Giulia's brows are impeccable, of course.)

Summer Sky

Check out Earthsky to see the comings & goings in our solar system this week. It's fascinating. It might even tempt you to get up very early...or go to bed very, very late.

On the menu this week? Saturn is fixated, there will be a very long total lunar eclipse tonight & all week keep your eyes peeled for the daytime moon. That's plenty!

Everyday Luxury - Pineapple

Pineapples were something we bought rarely until this past March. Since then, we've bought one every week. They're available year-round but at their harvest peak from March through July. Golden fair-trade pineapples (including some organic) are available for $2.99 - $3.99 on sale. It's worth it, whether you have a family or you live alone. We haven't had any leftover to make salsa or to use as a facial mask.

Carve up the pineapple & store the leftovers in the fridge; it will disappear quickly. Icy pineapple on a hot summer evening is a low-calorie thing of beauty. (Some terrific ideas if yours last longer than ours.) If you have a cat or dog, you can tie the discarded pineapple top onto their head in a tribute to Carmen Miranda. (Kidding!)

1000 Frames of Hitchcock

Some film fun. Check out the 1000 Frames of Hitchcock project, which is..."an attempt to reduce each of the 52 available major Hitchcock films down to just 1000 frames. The aim of the project is to create a library of images which can be used to illustrate blog posts, web articles and reviews, etc." Thanks to the thoughtful folks behind the project.

If you can't wait for a To Catch a Thief DVD in the mail, Netflix has a few Hitchcock titles available instantly (the most famous being Dial M for Murder).

Sass & Class

This is a head scratchin' & shakin' thing. It's a Seinfeld episode. Woman ticketed for wearing a short skirt while cycling. Where is this? New. York. City. * Pls see update at end of post.

From Cycle Chic Copenhagen yesterday: "What may appear as a joke has proved to be yet another ridiculous incident involving uninformed police officers stopping cyclists for fictional infractions or to chastise them with self-invented rules." Visit Cycle Chic Copenhagen for more photographs, including one of the (alleged) ticketee.

Update - we're checking out reports that this is a hoax. Very uncool, if so. The fact that ticketing has happened elsewhere made it seem probable. Will update. Still, check out the cool skirt-wearing posts at Cycle Chic. Also, there will be a #shortskirtcelebrationride in NYC.

Update (again)

Here's are details from Maureen at Inspired Cyclists. A terrific blog, btw. A celebration ride is being planned for Thursday, 7pm, starting at Columbus Circle. If you're on Twitter, search the hashtag #biknyc for details. Giulia the Cat & her editor will be there in spirit. In short-shorts!

Have a Lovely Weekend

Have a great weekend (we're late getting started here). Some things to think about:

Start
planning summer fun or before you know it, it'll be September. Yes, really.

Plan a short trip if you can't get away for long.

Learn how to sail. Or let someone else handle it in NYC & Annapolis, MD

Make a strawberry shake.

Off to hand-wash those pesky wool sweaters still in a pile...

Summer Berries

A busy summer morning here but as the thermometer plummets to a mere 90 degrees (aieee), a berry-picking trip might be in order. (Of course, this does not include the redheaded one...she likes berries but is not keen on farm work.) If you are feeling similarly optimistic, visit Pick Your Own. It has listings for countries other than the States, too.

Make this super-easy oven
raspberry jam using Nigella's recipe. Giulia's editor makes it several times a year. It makes you feel like the genius that you are not!
Back soon.

A Kitten Shower

You are cordially invited to a baby shower. For kittens.

Yes, that's right. The wonderful folks at Washington Animal Rescue League (WARL) are holding a kitten shower on Sunday, June 12 from noon to 2pm.

June is the height of “kitten season” for animal shelters, and the League is seeking help in caring for the scores of kittens they will take in, raise, and find homes for. Please click the link to see what you can bring if you'd like to attend (& learn how to care for the little ones).

If you want to see some darling kittens & learn about caring for them, visit the amazing Charlene Butterbean & her Itty Bitty Kitty Committee.

Summer in the City

It seems inadequate to say, "It's hot." Because it's more like "Wowsers, it's HOT!"

Giulia's editor just returned from a long walk with visiting friends. It's tempting to stay inside but try to get out...maybe before noon or just as the sun is setting. Plan an urban hike - this means along the trail of coffee shops, gelato carts, & the like. You don't have to rough it.

If you visit Washington (or are new here or just need a few ideas), visit Washington Walks. If you're in London, check out Best Summer Walks. For NYC, try Walking Off The Big Apple. We can't list everyone's town, so do a search for "summer walks."

Coast of France, June 1944

A solemn anniversary. New-to-us terrific photographs.

"It's no mystery why images of shocking, unremitting violence spring to mind when one hears the deceptively simple term, "D-Day." We've all seen -- in black-and-white photos, movies, old news reels -- what happened on the beaches of Normandy as the Allies unleashed an historic assault against German defenses on June 6, 1944.

But in rare, color photos taken before and after the invasion, LIFE photographer Frank Scherschel captured countless other, lesser-known scenes from the run-up to the onslaught and the heady weeks after: American troops training in small English towns; the French countryside, implausibly lush after the spectral landscape of the beachheads; the reception GIs enjoyed en route to the capital; the liberation of Paris. As presented here, in masterfully restored color on the anniversary of D-Day, Scherschel's pictures feel at-once profoundly familiar and somehow utterly, vividly new." - via LIFE.

Vacation: a magic and sacred word for the French. Indeed, La Lettre is international, but quite a few of us are and remain French. Vacation, what a dilemma. Vacation, yes, closing of La Lettre, no. How can La Lettre stay alive for 6 weeks from July 12 to August 26?

A simple, funny and friendly idea. We are turning La Lettre over to you: you, our contributors and readers. If you would like, if the idea amuses you, you can send us your favorite holiday pictures. Your picture and only one will run with a caption. It is not a contest, just a reminder of the friendship that we have shared now for nearly nine months.

We need the photographs in the following resolution. In HD, 1920×1080 pixels, down to 1024×768 at the minimum.
