Hand-tied Bouquets

Hand-tied bouquets are not just for weddings; they are for Christmas, too. So pretty & who wouldn't love one as a gift? (Yes, that was a hint.) xoxo

A tutorial (the font is small but it is quite clear so give it a go).

Handmade Holidays

Yes, yes, one more thing to worry about for the holidays. Make stuff. Oh please, nooooo,  you squeal as you plug your ears. Don't stress out; don't worry about making something complicated or a lot of something complicated. Find something simple that appeals to you & try it. It can be relaxing. On our menu are these heart-shaped felt ornaments. If you're the Valentines-type, they can do double-duty, too.

Here are 101 Handmade Christmas Ornaments - go to it.

Keep up with Lori's lovely Handmade Holidays label for inspiration.

Remember Laura's snowflake curtain? She is also a prolific ornament maker. Easy, cute, free tutorials.

Make Vintage Christmas Cards

You can use these images for something other than cards, of course, use your imagination. It is that time of year; don't yell at the messenger! Christmas & Hanukkah are popular searches on GG so we're giving the people what they want.:) xo/gg

Vintage Holiday Crafts is a huge source of clip art for nearly every holiday & occasion. You can even make your own vintage-style gift certificate--for anything. We won't waste anyone's time listing, just visit. The rules are clear & the site is generous. It's hard to believe sometimes that anyone would do something like compile an enormous collection just because...but that appears to be the case.

Knit & Purl

It's not that difficult & it feels good to start (& finish) a project that has nothing to do with actual work. It can be expensive to knit a sweater, sure; but choose a scarf or mittens, a hat, to begin. Look for yarn sales. Choose something that will be easy to set down & pick up again. Advice from us to you: do not decide to knit your Hanukkah & Christmas gifts this year. Listen to the voice of experience here - don't do it. The stress is more than you can handle.

Free (!) knitting links & these are but a very few. Google 'free' & 'knitting' - wow. (Also, 'poetry' & 'knitting' - really interesting what comes up.)

Knitting Pattern Central is huge & free; it has lots of tutorial links.

A poem about knitting (sort of:); and knitting for poets.

Origami on Walls

French artist Mademoiselle Maurice creates art for the open air. She uses origami & lace (among other media) & installs them in the streets of Paris. In this origami installation she pays homage to Hiroshima victim - and anti-nuclear weapons activist -Sadako Sasaki. Here is a lovely (short) vimeo about that project.

How to make origami cranes; for origami roses, here are simple instructions & a helpful video.

Strawberry Season

The laptop/poky internet problems continue. Meanwhile, suddenly (it seems) it's June aka the berry season. If you live in the DC-area, Butler's Orchard is a great place to pick your own berries (when possible). Otherwise, the farmers market is the place to go.

Adorable berry picking photographs & two good ideas on what to do with the berries. Honestly, though, does anyone really make anything on the first few go-rounds of local berries? From basket to mouth is the norm in these parts:)

Paper Airplanes

There might be something more gratifying than making a little child laugh really hard but we don't know what that might be. This is really simple. Take some paper, make an airplane (or several) & do what comes naturally. You won't get them to go as high as the ones in the photograph (probably) but if there's a bit of breeze, you never know. (See here to review the physics of flight & good for you. Just don't be a nag about it. This is for fun.)

Easter Eggs, Naturally

Poke around the fridge & pantry before you replenish egg dyes this year. You just might have everything you need on hand or you can add items to this week's market list.

Here at GG, we're going to try some new-to-us natural dyes. We do use beets & onion skins but Two Men and a Little Farm have inspired us with their terrific chart of multiple possibilities. (TheKitchn also has a good post with concise instructions & photographs.)

It's always fun to hop over to Martha Stewart's site; no one else has such a round-up for holidays & Easter is no exception, including last-minute ideas.

Make Vintage Valentine Cards

We quite understand that you can't time travel to make some valentines. (Please tweet us if we are mistaken, for it would be utterly cool to receive a time travel tweet.) What we mean is, visit Vintage Holiday Crafts, The Graphics Fairy, Karen's Whimsey, & The Vintage Moth to download images you like (there are many different styles of vintage) & then put together some cards. (Or get everything ready & then have children or friends make some cards.) If you'll be hand-delivering, these doily envelopes are pretty, easy, & inexpensive.

Hanukkah Prep

Hanukkah begins in just (slightly) over six days. Even if you do not celebrate the Festival of Lights, you probably know those who do. Wouldn't it be nice if you made something for their holiday? Imagine their surprise (& delight) when you offer them something you made, whether it's a quick card, a dreidel, a yummy edible, or a something slightly more elaborate. That could be your holiday gift to them. If you know they don't have a menorah that they really like, why not look here & see if one of these less-conventional designs might be something they'd like.

War is Over! (If You Want It)

This is another popular search on GG. You can download any number of the more than 100 translations of the famous card by John & Yoko, here, on flickr. There is also a request from the administrators to help with translations & a big thank you for those who have helped so far. Check it out if you see something that needs attention.

Yoko suggests that people print & display in windows, schools, workplaces, cars & elsewhere over the holiday season, and send as postcards to your friends. We have a few hanging up on the wall near our desk.
Also visit Imagine Peace for more updates about projects there.

Make Vintage Christmas Cards

It's that time of year! (Stop yer grousin':) This is one of the most popular searches on GG.

We also have Hanukkah crafts & clip art, & games. Because Hanukkah is not as early as last year, there's time to post in the coming weeks. However, if you are in the DC-area, or will be, & would like to go to the 20 December National Menorah lighting on the Mall, tickets go fast. Click here & good luck.

Put a Pom-pom On It

Giulia's editor likes to think she's clever. We've been looking at our nice but unremarkable winter pull-on hat/beanie (purchased for 50 cents at a thrift shop) & feeling ho-hum about it. That is until this a.m. when Erica showed the way: pom-pom it. *smacks forehead*

Trick-or-Treat for Big Cats

For ways to celebrate a feline-themed Halloween, check out National Geographic Kids. They have printable masks, costume ideas, labels for collection boxes, & a cat o'lantern for their worthy Cause an Uproar initiative. Of course, there are Halloween ideas that are non-cat related. Eyeball deviled eggs, anyone?

Teach Yourself to Knit

It is not that difficult to knit a scarf. Stop sassing back; it is not. GG's editor just finished watching a few videos & clicking through The Basics of Knitting. We know basic knitting but wanted to see if we could recommend them. Yes, yes, yes. If you don't like these links, just do a search for 'teach yourself to knit.' Gazillion hits.

The weather is finally turning cooler & crisp (goodbye evil humidity...
Giulia's fuzzy forehead was about to sprout funghi) & the urge to knit has hit.

There are lots of sales on yarns & patterns online & in stores. Warning: Don't invest in much beyond basic needles & some pretty yarn to test your interest. The larger the needles, the faster a scarf appears. Now go to it!

Kim of Everything Etsy must not sleep. She put together a list of links to 101 free downloads: from crafts to thank-you cards to labels to posters & many things in between. As she said, "Make sure your printer has color ink...". We downloaded these terrific fox bookmarks last night.

Thanks, Kim!

Make a Card for a Mother

It doesn't have to be yours...it could be for anyone. Also, please remember that not all little ones (& even some semi-big ones) have someone to help them out with this holiday. Think of children who don't live with their mom, those who are being raised by a single mom & there aren't family or friends to help - it happens a lot; & let's remember the children in military families. (Visit Joining Forces on Whitehouse.gov to find out how to help.)

Martha Stewart has some wonderful DIY card projects (like the one above, a pop-up card. There's also a video on the site in the lower-right hand corner). Here's a cute kid's project guide (a pdf) from the current print magazine. You can help the children in your life by downloading it & printing it for them. (What are we thinking? They knew how to do it before you did:)
If vintage illustrations are more your style, visit Vintage Holiday Crafts & Clip Art. There are lovely images you can put together to make a pretty card.

DIY - Cameo Valentines

This lovely project is by Olivia of A Field Journal for Victoria Magazine last year. There is a free download to get started, here. GG's editor thinks that lots of the Jane Austen blogeuses would like these.

If you have a paint strip collection (apparently way too many of you do), here's an easy & cute idea
while cheering on the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday. (You are, aren't you?)

Write a Letter

Don't you love getting letters through the mail? It is one of the most personal and meaningful means of communication. Revive the art of letter writing—write a letter to a friend! Begin by creating your own personal stationery, here at the Smithsonian's National Postal Museum's site. (The Activity Zone has many other fun ideas, too.) Do we have to remind you that, ahem, you probably owe some thank-you cards? (photograph by the ghost factory on flickr via The Benevolent Postcard Society)

Make A Snow Globe (Yes, Really)

We have everything we need but the glycerin. It's $US3-4 at the within-walking distance hardware store. When the howling winds abate (oh please), Giulia's editor will pick some up along with important items (GG's cat food). What else do you need? A jar, glitter, distilled water (don't you iron?! No we don't either, so it's on the list), glue. You can even make teeny ones from baby food jars. How difficult can this be anyway? We'll let you know soon. (photographs & instructions via Martha Stewart)
