Made4Aid Monday on Friday - Chic Scarves

The days are going quickly. To wait for a few days means you might miss out on an excellent purchase for the holidays. Hence Friday-for-Monday.

Made4Aid's Etsy shop has lovely handmade/hand-loomed cashmere, wool/silk, & wool scarves for winter. The very reasonable price (from $USD 18-30) includes shipping anywhere in the world. They are long, soft, & can be wrapped in the French manner, but of course. GG's editor bought one last year for a friend's winter birthday & it was a big hit. Of course, there are other items at Made4Aid, too, & you really should check it out. (photograph by the fab Garance Doré)

Scarf Chic, partie neuf - Made4Aid

People, people...why are you shopping at cookie-cutter establishments? Surely you would like something ( for yourself or for a gift) unique. Well, if so, please go to Made4Aid & have a look at the lovely items up for auction. (Made4Aid also welcomes comments on their posts, not just bids.) It is NOT an annoying create-a-profile-password-thing. You do not have to be a blogger. Leave a comment with your bid on an item post. If you have the highest bid, you can pay via Paypal or send a check with a good old postage stamp on it. You're making us look bad! That's the real truth...we admit it. Oh woe....

This beautiful & handmade scarf is up for auction until Wednesday, 14 October, 9am New York time. There is no bid yet & it's a mere $US25 to start. We saw something quite like this at not-to-be-named "cool" retailer downtown....for $35! It most definitely was not gorgeous wool & silk, nor was it made by hand. We won't start on where the profits will go.

Scarf Chic, la huitième partie, Mont Blanc

Though you can barely make out the off-center, rakishly tied scarf-bow, believe us when we say that then-7 year-old Anne-Sophie was already adding a personal twist to her daily ensemble. Oui. Would we lie? GG's editor was so impressed with A-S's insouciant, charming manner (& her excellent manners, too). Click here to go to Garance Doré's Les jolies choses...this is where scarves go to grow up. The hike was in the Alps, on the Mont Blanc side. We don't want to slight the Italians, so here is a recipe for the gorgeous Monte Bianco. (Nigella Lawson's lazy woman's MBianco, here. Marcella Hazan's still-very-easy-classic, here.)

For good measure, here is a New York Times interview with Marcella & Victor Hazan in September. We look forward to her soon-to-be-published memoir. Finally, here are some cute kid photos by The Sartorialist.

Scarf Chic, la sixième partie...meow!

It's all in how you tie it, how you work it. Thanks to Birmingham-based (UK) Scary-Canary shop on e-Bay for the adorably named Vintage Pussy-bow neck scarf. Silver-cream, 1940s, Deco. What more could you want? You want more? There are more. GG is entranced by the moving slideshow, the bird logo, & the idea of slinking about adorned with a pussy-bow scarf. She was thinking about flower pins & scarves this past summer. Lately, she's been watching videos of Mireille G (& others) twirl pieces of fabric into stylish magic.

If you're chic & self-assured like GG, wind one 'round your head like this charming London girl.

Scarf Chic, la cinquième partie...clouds of warmth

These have a different function (keeping warm in style) but they remind us of Renaissance ruffs. Again, these are from the Canadian shop knittles on Etsy. Instead of a new coat, they zip up what's already in the closet; it could serve as a signature piece. There are short scarves, along with the cowls, here & elsewhere on Etsy's site, called 'scarflettes.' The knittles artist refers to them as 'clouds of warmth.' Poetic, non? Naturellement, GG wants one & her editor admits that it would be chic. However, we intend to pick up the knitting needles soon for a scarf (to be worn by a human), not an Elizabethan cat ruff. GG Central Management expects & is prepared for a protest, GG-style.

Scarf Chic, la troisième partie...

We can't really publish today as blogger.com is tied up in knots & has been for hours upon hours. We do wish we could be as calm & chic & cool as the woman with the cat in this fabulous drawing. It's from Sonia Rykiel, via one of our favorite French fashion/style/design/illustration blogs by garance doré. We'll have to "dress" up this post later. Enjoy. We're off to fume as this is not a propitious start to a weekend. GG is already kicking back...she is a cool, calm cat today.

Scarf Chic, la deuxième partie... inspiration in color

GG Central loves M & Co. Someone's having fun with Picasa (or similar). GG's editor has much Picasa-ing to do & no time. Until GG Central has the Scarf Chic series under control, we'll acknowledge sites that have it together. Visit!

That's right. We're punting...while
GG does cat-yoga stretches to Petula's Downtown.

Scarf Chic, la première partie

A little fashion relief for a messy world.

GG's editor is just sick at the nastiness she's hearing from the non-illustrious Rudi G. on a podium tonight. Take it from GG Central: don't listen to hate. Hate makes people into complete idiots.

The scarf at top is from Paris & was a gift to GG's editor from a friend's great aunt; she bought it herself in Paris in the late 1940s. GG's editor wore it several times a week with her jeans & one of about three sweaters when she was a student in Strasbourg. (Everyone wore jeans, mostly.) Sometimes, she wore it atop her head as she pedalled home near the Rhine--past flocks of really angry geese. Flying on her vélo, sometimes one or both ballerinas (shoes, not dancers:) also went flying. (It was Strasbourg, so she didn't blame those geese a bit for their peevishness, perhaps knowing their gruesome fate.)

Bonne nuit, bisou, baci, xoxo, GG

PS: Dreams of Hermes....pourquoi pas? Just one?!
